Hello all, haven't posted in a long while. Anyways, I have a loud slapping noise coming from my engine, 2.5L SVT. I took the car to four different shops when the noise first started, sounded like a knock. Three shops told me it was a main or rod bearing and i needed a new bottom end. Fourth shop told me they couldn't tell what was wrong with it and it would be more cost effective to replace the motor than to pay someone to troubleshoot it. After that I figured I would drive it around until it blew up. So I'm driving it around and all of a sudden the slight knock noise becomes a horrendously loud slapping noise. it is coming from the rear cylinder bank at front of the motor (passenger side). I am thinking (hoping) that it is a timing chain tensioner that has gone bad. After that the car sat at my house for about a week and I decided to take it back to the shop that said they didn't know what it was. Well about a block and a half before I get there, the noise goes back to the muffled knock sound the way it was the first time I took it there. So i took it home and the next day it starts with the loud slapping again. Anyways I've ordered the Ford service manual CD and am going to try to tackle this myself. There is absolutely no change in driveability. If anyone has any tips or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot and keep up this wonderful web site. I haven't found another that is more informative or entertaining.

And i did use search and all that, I've been registered since 02/01 but i'm still a newbie

It sounds like what happend to my car. I had some loud slapping noises coming from the valve cover area. It ended up being the main bearings. Had to replace the engine. The only thing different is that i DID have some driveability issues.

yeah that's what's weird about mine, no driveability issues. not that i've been driving it, but the slapping noise gets considerably faster when I let off the accelerator. anyways, i'm going to tear into it next week.
