I've been reading a lot about water pump failure on 2.5L cars. I have a 97 with an ATX. Tranny and pre-cats were replaced at 132K. Now have 145K on car and I am VERY concerned about what to do with the car. I'm seriously thinking about trading it in. Car runs excellent otherwise. What do you think.....

Keep it. My car is now at 164,000+ miles on it and it is running great. You may have little fixes here and there, but nothing that can't be fixed. If you buy another car, you'd run into these problems sooner or later. Especially if you know the history on the car.

If it runs great and you like it, keep it. There's probably 50 people on this site who'll tell you a water pump replacement is no biggie if that's all you're worried about and you replace it before it breaks. I'd be more worried about the ATX doing something rude but even that can be fixed. Beats a car payment! Karl

changing the water pump is an easy job. do not get rid of a good car you know about and trade for a mystery car. all cars break, just fix yours. this is a no brainer. your car has no trade in value now anyway and it is worth way more to you as a dependable daily driver. if you change the water pump before it breaks, you can shop around for an installed price. that way, you beat the wreaker tow and missed work and you can shop for the best value. just make sure you get the metal impeller pump. this is still a job you can do yourself. just check out the how to post to see how easy it is.

I don't have access to ramps to do it myself. It's just that after awhile it gets to be tiresome fixing one thing or another. Put new tranny in last fall and would like to get moneys worth out of it. I don't know, I'm looking at a Passat now.

You don't need ramps. Just slide something (bucket, basin) under the car to catch the coolant when you crack the w/p housing open.
The w/p is on the top of the engine, right hand side when you are looking in from the front.
I'm amazed it lasted this long, good to see the car still strong though at 164k. Hope mine lasts that long.
