My '95 Contour (2.0, auto) seems to have a transmission problem.

When I put it in drive, its almost like its in neutral. It will pull itself but if you apply any pressure, it slips like its in neutral. Strange thing is, when this started; the speedometer stopped working.

When the car warms up the speedometer 'jumps' a little then starts working. When this happens the tansmission starts (somewhat) working.

I took it past a local transmission shop and they want to replace the speed control sensor for $200 and said that may or may not fix it.

PLease help!!

Check your transmission fluid level. When mine is low in my sable it starts acting weird under load.

I'm not an expert, but if I am not mistaken, a 95 will have a cable driven speedo. Check for leaks from your transmission that would cause the low fluid, it might be coming from the seal where the speedo cable is plugged into the trany.

Just a thought.

I don't thinks it is the speedo that is causing it, because the speedometer starts working after it warms up. When it warms up, the transmission starts working a little. Stress a little.

Here is what I found. From what a buddy of mine told me, this could be the cause of a bad speed sensor. According to him, if the speed sensor is bad, the signal to and from the car's control box will screw up the trany shifting as well as the speedo. He says since it is magnetic, it works better when the car warms up.

Now, how true this is???????? I have mild to high confidence in his opinions. He does own a garage though.

Hope this helps.

It's possible to test the speed sensor, find a shop that knows what they are doing.

Hey Timberwolf, I just spoke with a gentleman that used to be a service manager for Ford a few years back, and his opinion was the same (speed sensor). A speed sensor can be checked by running a diagnostic check on the cars computer box. Oh yeah, and when I asked him, he said speed sensor with out me saying it first.

That's three opinions in agreement.
