I have a 1998 Ford Contour SE with 103,000 km on it. I have major fuel problems. I'm only getting 400km per tank. Both O2 sensors and all spark plugs have been replaced. There are no codes. This has been going on for over a year. Any suggestions would be greatlky apprecieated. Thanks.

Are you leaving puddles of gas wherever you park? J/K

Are you sure the check engine light works and there are really no codes?

Don't go by per/tank, the gas guage can be off.

Many things can cause poor gas mileage, most will cause a CEL or at least affect performance. Give any relevant info (like foot glued to the floor).

I recently had a similar problem. My fuel economy has been gradually decreasing over the last year...no codes though. Last week, I started to notice a gradual decline in engine power. I changed the fuel filter then took it for a ride. It seemed to do the trick until...POP, HISS, uh oh. I brought the car to my mechanic, and the code for faulty EGR valve popped up. Turns out the actual problem is with my Catalytic Converters...all three of them were plugged solid and one of them split, causing the HISS. I was told by Ford that this is common and is probably to blame for the decreased fuel economy. I am supposed to get the car back on Monday. I can confirm it then.

Oh yeah, the cost for new Cats is $1800 Canadian, not including labour!!! Luckily, Ford has a secret warranty on the Catalyst system for 8 years / 130000 Km, so the repair won't cost me a dime!!

Just one possibility.

Why? That is a federally mandated emissions warranty and is not a secret. It's probably in your owner's manual (warranty booklet) if you should bother to read it.

I was reading up on Ford's way of reducing costs for recalls. Its an interesting article, ill look for it later when I have time, and ill post it here. Ford doesnt like loosing money on what they've caused. Im not saying that overall Ford is bad. I am on the contour enthusiast's forum, but Ford just seems to think more about money than quality.

I DID read the owner's manual.

The Fed emissions warranty only applies to pre-'98 vehicles.

Are you sure? I swear when I bought my car that this was the standard warranty.

No Idon't leave any puddles. My foot isn't that heavy. Also the engine light does work because it still comes on with the key in the accessory position. Now the other thing that happend was I had a leaky transmission gasket (at the front of the engine) and the servo seal went at the same time. But have been told a thousand times that the two are not connected to fuel loss. Also the engine light use to come on and stay on for about 10-15 seconds after starting the car. Now it doesn't. Is that normal? Thanks.
