Hello all,

Yesterday I loaned my room mate my car and told him to take my spare's. The keys are ford keys and they have "Ford Family of Fine Cars" stamped right on them so I am assuming they are originals. Anyhow, the key is now loged in the ignition. It is the correct key and I can start the car with it but when I try to get it out, it comes out half way and that's it. I tried to get it out with vice grips but that key is really really stuck! Anyone have this issue or heard of it? I would really like to get my darn key out! Is this Ford's problem seeing as it's their key?

Pissed off Owner;

Adam

Rotate steering wheel slightly while trying (in case steering wheel lock is applying pressure)

Try WD40 and move key in and hopefully out

Try depressing lock cylinder (circle of metal around keyhole)

Go to locksmith

All I can think of at the moment, good luck

I wasn't sure, is it an automatic? you may want to try moving the shifter around as well. the lock from the transmission may be keeping you from pulling the key out.

it's a 95 2.5 mtx...I have tried everything except the wd-40...I'll try that but If that works it'll prob rust out in a year, so back to square one!!! if I can get it out...i'll dip my regular set of keys in Lithium grease and lube the lock up a bit....that should help for future I guess!!!

Hey Adam, You might try turning the ignition to "off", and then push in on the ignition bezel with the index finger from one hand (it can be pushed in about 1/16th of an inch because of spring), while you gently remove the key with the other hand. Sounds like you will be needing a new ignition switch soon. Trying to force it out will probably damage the pin tumblers.

Rust in a year because you used WD-40???? confused Why would that be? WD-40 is a water repellant, that means it'll push water away thus reducing the chance of rust.

It is probably a key that the dealer made and has never been used before(unless you used it). If so, the key may have some rough edges that might be getting caught on something. So just take the key and push in and pull out and just keep doing this for a while. The shavings should either fall off or just wear down enough to get passed where it is caught. At the dealership I work at, we get this problem a lot. So this should work and it may take some time.

Good Luck!!!!!

WD-40 = BAD for locks...

WD40 contains a substantial amount of oil (petroleum distilates) that tend to collect a good amount of dirt and dust. In cold weather, the oil in this product can and will get tacky and over time will start to solidify causing the lock to fail.

Recommend a silicone spray if necessary.
