Hi Guys,

First time poster. I just noticed that my Contour had a burning smell a few days ago and then last night I noticed my radio, electric mirrors, courtesy lights, and clock don't work. And the solenoid shifter out a park "clicks" or is activated when I touch my brakes. Any ideas? I have a
'97 GL V6 Automatic. I would think it's probably the pesky Fuse 34 I read about on this web site - but would that be attributed to the clicking noise, too?

I'm not a car-tinkering guy at all, so bare with me. Thanks!
- Mike

Welcome onboard.

Fuse 34 feeds all of the above plus the gearshift lever unit (under console) which contains the shift interlock solenoid. I believe that the clicking is normal, however.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if the burning smell is "normal" for a blown fuse or could it be a wiring problem tied into that fuse?

Also, the clicking noise didn't occur until when the fuse blew. I never heard it before except for when the car was in park and I hit the brakes. Now it makes the clicking noise when I touch the brakes while driving.

Best,
Mike

With your clarification; italics are the norm, latter probably side effect of blown F34.

I smell it when I burn a fuse. I seem t odo it quite often as well... I also blew fuse 34 last year when hooking up my new HU without disconnecting the battery.

I had to replace my fuse on the first day I bought the car. I was so afraid that I had an electrical problem, but it has not acted up since.

Shortly after I had the fan regulator thing happen. Watch for an A/C fan that opperates on only high speed. Be interesting if there's some kind of pattern to this.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Oh, I had the fan operate on High speed years ago. I think we're all caught up now. I'm going to see if I can do this myself - if not, my friends at the repair shop know me well.

Hmmm, I just checked my fuse 34 with a continuity tester, and it passed. So if it's not the fuse that's causing that, what could it be?

I don't think there is a pattern to it - I had my fan regulator go several months ago, and just now I'm having problems with fuse 34 (although I've already discovered it's not fuse 34 itself, but some other problem with that circuit).
