Was driving down the road & noticed cool air was not coming from AC. Then the car began to lose power & would just creep along no matter how hard I pressed the accelerator. Gratefull, I had enough power to get to the side of the road. When I tried to restart the car, it would not turn over--just gave a clicking sound when the ignition key was turned. This is the same car I posted about in March that would not start when I went out one evening. Ford fixed that by doing something with the auto shifter. My independent mechanic told me yesterday that I need an alternator.

Well if your alternator needs replacement then presumably you've been running on battery power only and now its dead. Was the battery warning light not on?

Thanks Did not notice the light & think I would have. Is there anything that can be done to test the alternator?

Well easiest way requires voltmeter across battery which should show about 12.5 volts with engine off, and about 13.5-14 with engine running and alternator working properly.
Alternators are sometimes replaced for noisey bearings even tho' they are OK electrically.
What reason did mechanic give when he suggested replacement?

Well battery at 9 volts is shot and could bring down alternator in process. Not good.
