I know that we have a bunch of bargain hunters here on the CEG so I figured I'd post this question to you guys before I started putting in heavy research.

Right now, I currently have SBC/Ameritech landline phone service and their prices have become absolutely ridiculous. I have BASIC service, no caller ID, no voicemail, no nothing....and my monthly bill is still $45/month .

The reason for this is mainly due to SBC considering anything outside of a 2 mile radius of your home as a long distance call. I know I'm exagerrating a bit there, but it sure seems that way. We don't make any true long distance calls to speak of (out-of-state, or even cross state for that matter) on any regular or semi-regular basis. The extent of our long distance consists of me calling various Contour aftermarket suppliers once every month or so...literally.

So my question is, have any of you found a provider that offers decent pricing...or is that an oxymoron in itself? We don't really need any add-on services, though caller ID would be nice. Otherwise, I'm just looking for a decent, cheap landline service that won't charge me $45/month for local service and the occasional call to people in the geographic area code directly bordering mine.

TIA for any help you can offer.

My parents use verizon for our home phone. No long distance plan at all, just local. When we make a long distance call (once a month) we use 1010321 or something.

Yeah, for that very same reason, we quit using a landline totally. We were paying the same as you, and all we got were telemarketers calling, and anyone we know calls us on our cell phones anyway.
