Why does the car smell like sulfur when you put the throttle down fast? Is there any way of curing this problem in an easy manner? If someone has any suggestions that would be most helpful thank you.

what year, engine and milage? The V-6 up to 2000 were known for this and there is a tsb from ford to replace the cats. If you are within I believe 5 years and 80,000 miles your cats are still under warranty(check your owners manual to be sure). Here is the TSB below.
Article No.00-25-2 · EXHAUST - SULFUR ODOR FOLLOWING AGGRESSIVE DRIVING - 2.5L VEHICLES - CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE AND COUGAR WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE - CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE WITH MANUAL TRANSAXLE BUILT FROM 5/7/99 - COUGAR WITH MANUAL TRANSAXLE BUILT FROM 5/24/99 ONLY Publication Date: NOVEMBER 30, 2000
FORD: 1998-2000 CONTOUR MERCURY: 1998-2000 MYSTIQUE1999-2000 COUGAR This TSB is being republished in its entirety to update the vehicle models covered. ISSUE: An objectionable exhaust, sulfur, or rotten egg odor following aggressive driving, such as full-throttle acceleration, may occur on some vehicles. This may be caused by excessive sulfur in the fuel reacting with the normal chemical reactions which take place in the catalytic converter. ACTION: Replace the catalytic converter with a revised catalytic converter. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details. SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE APPLIES ONLY TO 2.5L CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE AND COUGAR VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLES, 2.5L CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE VEHICLES WITH MANUAL TRANSAXLES (MTX) BUILT FROM 5/7/1999 AND 2.5L COUGAR VEHICLES WITH MANUAL TRANSAXLES (MTX) BUILT FROM 5/24/1999.

Check to see if your battery is overcharging - water level down. Nothin' like the smell of Hydrogen gas ...either that or the Bar-b-que in the trunk is leaking.

Is the warranty for the main Cat only covered in the US or in Canada as well? My Cougar really smells like rotten eggs when I drive it hard and I automatically thought that the Cat was failing. If this is the case for us Canadians, would any Ford/Mercury stealership replace the Cat free of charge as long as you are within the 5 years and 80,000 miles warranty?

i have the same exact problem with my 1996 mystique. it is a terrible smell, and i drive aggressively. its not a very good thing when you are driving a girl or two. they think you farted, and how are you supposed to explain that your car farts once in a while?!?! Are you sure the dealership will replace it for free if under 80,000 miles? I really dont want to show up there, have them fix it, and then it turns out that i owe them money.

No, 8/80 is US Federal mandate only.

Early models had a recall on cats. Failing cats is not the only reason for the smell. Ford must test them to see if they are bad. If they pass, you just pay for diagnosis.

I disconnected the vacuum line to the secondaries about 6 or 8 months ago, and the sulfur odor happened. i drove the car for about 10 minutes, reconnected the secondaries. a day or two later, i disconnected them again, and the odor was gone. i think it has something to do with teh buildup that happens in the secondaries. when you remove upper intake manifold and look at the butterflies, you can see a gunky buildup that is not present on the primaries. my theory is that during aggressive driving, the secondaries are open more and the gunk has the chance to burn a little bit with the added airflow. that produces the sulfur smell. once the gunk is burned away, the smell leaves.
that is my theory, although i admit that after driving with the secondaries disconnected i havent gone back and looked to see if the gunk is still there or not.

It has nothing to do with the secondaries, well nothing really to do with them. The problem is at WOT or near that the engine opens everything up and for a short while some gas goes through the engine unburnt. When it hits the cats, the cats convert as much as is possable. For one reason or another the old cats seems to convert it badly. I don't understand exactly why this happenes this way, but this is what I have gathered.
