There have been many posts complaining about the water pumps failures on the 2.5 v6. I have checked with the 2 local Ford dealers in this area and they have replaced very few water pumps, and those that they did(upon checking their records with me ) the cars had well over 160,000 kms (100,000 miles). Also the after market parts people said they were'nt aware of any demand for their pumps.
One'75 Contour v6 that my friend owns from new has 325,000 kms on the same water pump.
I would like to hear from other 2.5 v6 owners that have high mileage water pumps.

I'm still low, 30k, but all the stories from everyone here set me straight. Around 50k I'm switching the pump out.

If you do a search you'll find A LOT of postings.

The many posts about water pump failures definitely have me nervous, and I'll probably replace mine before it goes bad.

However, I have a nagging suspicion that contour.org owners may be experiencing a greater failure rate, or failure at earlier mileage/age, than the general Contour owner population. My unscientific reasoning: contour.org owners are enthusiasts, and enthusiasts tend to drive their cars way harder than 'regular' owners. It's possible that driving style has absolutely no bearing on the water pump failures; I really have no idea if I'm talking out of my arse on this.

My 95 SE is at 73,000 miles. I don't know what happened before 50k, but the water pump hasn't been changed since I bought the car at 50k so I assume I'm running the original.

It is probably right to assume that CEG people are more aggressive in driving and more vocal in sounding off in this website.
However, I and many others truly believe that the stock plastic impeller wp is a flawed design that is prone to premature failure. When weighed against the potential consequences of destroying one's engine, changing it before it fails (less than $100) is cheap insurance!
I have been around cars all of my life and pumps in general for 20 years of my professional experience. I have never seen this type of catastrophic failure, without warning in any other case of pump malfunction. Usually a water pump will give some sort of warning of impending doom, like leaking or noise, but this one goes in a hurry.
I procrastinated in changing mine. Luckily I was near home when it did go and was able to get back in the garage without any damage.
I would definitely urge anyone to change it ASAP, before you're stuck out on the road or your engine is blown!

My engine went, but the water pump was still going strong at 116,000 miles. And my car was built in mexico. Did anyone ever check to see if maybe there was a connection between the bad pump, and where the car was built? I know the pumps were probably shipped in "just in time" for the assembly. Could it have been the fault of where the pump was made? Incidentally, the svt engine came with a new pump, so I used that to be safe.

Just turned 60K miles on my CSVT. No problems with my water pump. My moonroof motor's gears melted in the hot summer sun a couple of years ago. Arrrrrgh!

Forgot to mention in my original message, my 98.5 Mystique LS Sport 2.5 automatic has 74000km on it ,with the original pump .I really don't
know what to do, as there are some reports here about the waterpump with the metal impeller also failing but not because of the impeller.
Both the 5 speed and the automatic , with the 2.5 v6 are redlined at 6750 rpm , but the auto shifts (wot) at around 6250, I wonder if there are more waterpump failures with the 5 speed manual equipped cars, COMMENTS PLEASE. My dealer told me that my 98.5 had the white nylon impeller
and showed me one from the parts dept, they had it in stock for 9 months , no request for it from customers. I also wonder if the waterpump with the white impeller is any better than the original one with the black one, COMMENTS PLEASE.

Thankyou

Car built in Mexico
Drive car like Grandma would (well, OK, I do goose it once in a blue moon, but I'm a very conservative driver overall).
Pump fell to pieces at 70K

Black Impeller = BAD
