I took the family out ot dinner last night and on the way home I had to get on the gas at about 50 MPH or so to get up to speed faster merging onto the freeway. The ATX promptly downshifted to 2nd I assume and then about 5500 RPM or so is felt like the car was standing against a rev limiter. I lifted a little off the gas, the car upshifted and I was off. WTF was that?!?!?!? I can't duplicate the problem when driving by myself so I'm assuming it only does it under load. I had 3 adults, 2 kids, and a half tank of gas in the car when it acted up. Is this a sign of something bad coming in the tranny department? I plan on changing the fluid soon (last service was at 45k miles, by the previous owner). I'm looking at 67k on the odometer now. Other than that wierdity, the car seems to be driving fine. Any suggestions? Oh, BTW - what's up with the rev limiter at 4500 or so when free revving? I was checking out the exhaust note and I quickly ran into this rev limiter. The engine bouncing off this limiter sounds exactly like the car did when It was acting up on the freeway merge. This has me spooked into thinking the tranny was slipping causing the rev limiter to kick in . I hope not! Thanks, Shawn

There is a rev limiter on ATX's in park or neutral at 4000rpm to prevent damage to the torque converter.

Could be fuel pump. I am having problems like that. 1/2 tank and less, I have power loss that jerks the car and causes hard shifts.
As soon as it is constant, I am having it fixed. Have ESP and the last time in the dealer they could find no symptoms.

I guess all could do to verify this would be to get a fuel pressure gauge hooked up. I wonder if my TwEECer R/T will work with the EEC on the Contour...

Try replacing your Fuel Filter and see if it clears up. If it doesn't, then the fuel pump is next.

I actually replaced the fuel filter the day before. I'm gonna try the additive but I'm betting that I'll probably need a pump. Let me guess in the tank and gotta drop the bohemoth tank to change it? Time for some searching!
FWIW, I think I'm gonna add the drain 4 quarts and re-fill with Mobil One Synthetic ATF every other engine oil change for good measure.

Actually NO !
Pull out your back seat bottom cushion...
You'll find a big shiny silver plug in the floor. Carefully remove the plug, and the top of the fuel tank with the Fuel float assembly will be staring you in the face.
Get out your FORD or Chilton book and follow directions from there !!

If it is near the center of the seat, it should be right above the fuel tank, where you can remove the fuel float/pump assembly.
