Alright i cant remember how long it has been doing this, but when you start the car up the idle surges up to 2500 or 3000, then 5-10 secs later slowly goes back down to the normal level. As far as i know this isnt supposed to happen. To many times i have started up teh car and throwen it into gear and the tires squak. This is really bad when you up on ramps ..... Any ways what causes the RPM's to go up this high jsut from starting, any ideas.

IAC valve is sticking most likely. Clean or replace.

New IAC or TPS I would try first.

I get a high RPM on startup too.. it will chill at like 2K or 1500 for a while.. then will go down to normal again...

So you do have a CEL? That should give you a better clue.

Mine does the same thing, even though I have a Zetec.

That's normal... Was also gonna add that I used to have the surging idle problem on the zetec at start up just as said, and for other reasons, it was suggested that i clean the MAF sensor and i noticed when i started the car the next time, it did not surge and it hasn't for several times now. So try cleaning the MAF sensor.

it could be that your engine is just cold, try starting the car after you've driven it for a while and see if it surges.

The IAC (Idle Air Control) valve is the metal cylider sitting at the 2 o'clock position behind the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirc.) valve that looks kinda like a flying saucer in the pic...hope this helps!
