97 Contour - 112,000 miles - original clutch - and still going strong, using synth. motor oil, higher-octane fuel, keeping the fluid levels generous keeps my baby rolling

Here's the situation, in the past my O2's and other things have been the culprits, but as of late, something else is causing the car to stall.

A specific scenario is: driving down the road and then making a turn (left or right), downshifting while keeping my foot depressed on the clutch - the car stalls/shuts down/you name it.

In the same instance, if i make a turn, but don't downshift (or if i put the car into neutral), the car is fine. Something is occuring when i turn the car, depress the clutch to downshift. that's the best i can do in terms of pinpointing the problem.

If anyone's experienced this or has any recommendations/solutions, i would, as always, greatly appreciate it.

Wouldn't you know it! A friend of mine with a 98.5 SVT called me yesterday with the exact same problem. Well he was pulling up to a light and when he disengaged the clutch, the car shut off.

He could not get it restarted for anything. After getting it back to his house, he checked over all the fuses and found that the ABS fuse was blowen. Knowing that it was unrelated, he changed it out anyway. The car of course still would not start. He calls me and is telling me what all he had done up til this point. I ask him to turn it over a few times so that I could hear it (tring to tell if the engine was turning faster then normal) and it cranked right up! Go figure!

I talked to him tonight and he told me that the car did not give him a single problem today, but I told him to be on the look out. Things like this just don't happen once. He is coming over Saturday morning so I can clean his UIM/LIM anyway, so I will look at it further then and see if I can find anything. If I do, I will let you know.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for looking into that. The same thing happened to me in the past (coming to a light and engaging the clutch and stalling), but now it seems to just happen while turning the vehicle.

Go figure.

Well guys, I was having that problem too, only I have an ATX. My problem with the MAF thing got loose. I slide it back in, and it was fine after that. One of the clips on mine is broken, so I got to figure out a way to get it to stay on there. Good Luck.

i too have a very rare, but persistent, stalling issue when the clutch is engaged while slowing for a intersection. The RPMs drop to zero as if you'd turned off the car as you depressed the clutch. Any takers?
