I have a 99 se with a zetec (61250 miles)engine and when I come to a stop the engine wants to stall out but will catch itself and stay running.
When this occurs it seems that the final kickdown of the tranny didn't downshift. Can that cause the engine to want to stall out. Any help will be appreiciated . Stalling out in Pennsylvania

Do you have a check engine light? I just had this same problem (I have a 95 LX ATX) and had the MAF sensor and the O2 sensor back by the exhaust replaced. I also cleaned the EGR tubes and some tube was loose on the catalytic converter (when dealer did recall work). One of those three things fixed my problem. I think it was primarily the O2 sensor, personally.

Good luck

It sounds like a possible torque converter not dis-engaging. Try driving it with the overdrive off. If problem goes completely away, it's in the tranny. If problem persists in (regular) drive, I'd look towards the Idle Air Control valve (IAC).

Yeah- I agree- sounds like it could possibly be the IAC- $120 for part aand installation- that's what I was quoted by Ford for mine
