I don't know why SVT didn't just borrow from the cosworth side of the house. The escort cossies are still legendary cars. I guess they wanted to keep with their Naturally Aspirated high efficiency theme that they have been know for in the past. The problem is the FSVT was 5 years newer technology than the CSVT and still can't outperform it. I never understood why they realeased the FSVT without without at least equaling the performance of the CSVT...I mean come on its a 2door hatch versus a 4 door sedan. The car still pulled great reviews for its handling, ride, braking and moderate cudos for the engine performance. A good car but not great. Another thought, compare that with GM's 2.3L Quad4 powerplant released in 1988 with 180HP...um 15 years later and it barely matches it?

Actually, the FSVT engine is a Cosworth design. "Ford Motor Company's Special Vehicle Engineering Team (SVE) and Cosworth Technology have teamed up to deliver a special breed of a high-performance engine that will debut in the upcoming 2002 SVT Focus." http://www.cosworth-technology.co.uk/pages/central/news/2001/01.03.01-b.htmlBob

Foggiest clue? They tuned a 130HP Zetec to an emissions/sound legal 170. I believe this is without using a variable cam timing system like Honda and their iVtec. I think they did a fine job for the 2.0L and budget they had to work with. 250HP range or a failure? Dodge would be working with an additional .5L and is putting out probably ~230-240. That is also devoting most of their budget to producing big HP numbers, and not being as refined as SVT does with the Focus. If they are stuck with the Zetec and not the 2.3L, 225 would be an excellent number, even though you would consider it a failure...

I suspect that is just the advertising hype since most of our engine blocks use a cosworth casting process. Having a cosworth casting process used to produce the block doesn't give it any real link to the cosworth racing technology or engines.

think about what the focus svt engine is and it's not too bad, and you get more car than srt-4. nissan spec-v has like 180hp and matching torque but it's a 2.5L and it's more technologically advanced. honda has the 2.0L with 160hp and 130hp. srt-4 is a 2.4L w/ TURBO and has ~220hp+. so if you put it in perspective, the focus svt isn't too bad, but it could be better, and i'm sure with a turbo it would be awesome. I think they'll put a turbo on the 2.3L mazda engine replacing the zetec,, let's hope so.

What are you talking about? The 2.3L Duratec in the PZEV Focus is a much better engine then the Zetec. For one it is 50lbs lighter then the Zetec and second it can stand up to FI much better then the fragile Zetec.

I agree. I remember reading somewhere that on a track, if it werent for the SRTs engine, it would have been dead last in lap time comparisons (with SVT Focus, Mazdaspeed Protege, Nissan Sentra) due to inferior refinement in terms of handling. How about that mazdaspeed protege? I'd love to have one of them with a fat turbo kit... best handling of the group - could be an AutoX beast.

Upgrade the turbo and watch the engine explode.
