I smelt some gas this morning before i went to work, so when i went there, i lifted it up on the hoist that we have. (i work at a ford dealership). when i looked under there, there was gas leaking from around the spot where the filler neck meets the tank. there is a plastic retaining ring that broke because it was clogged with dirt. so i dropped the gas tank and removed the retaining ring and the rubber seal from the gas tank. it won't be fixed until tuesday, so i got a focus to drive for the weekend.
i was just wondering if this has happened to anybody else?? since there was so much dirt in there, my fuel filter was getting clogged pretty regularly. so people are having any problems with the fuel filter or a gas smell from the rear end, check this spot where the filler pipe meets the tank. just thought i would give a heads up. thanks!!

For the past few months, I've been smelling fuel every time I filled my tank. Finally did a search and found your note. I've had the work done to my car by a local garage. Unfortunately, the part wasn't available, so had to scramble to get a ride home and to work the next day.
Message is, if you smell fuel, it's probably the ring, and best to order the part (~$11) and have it on hand before the garage looks at it.
