Just out of curiosity, what are the repercussions of having over torqued spar plugs?

Stripping out the holes.

The big threat is from having over tightened plugs in the heads over heat cycling. The steel plugs with trash the aluminum threads.

It is "highly" recommended you use the proper torque and anti-seize.

I don't have a torque wrench so I just used the very slight hand tighten. Is that ok?

PM me the next time you do it, I'll let you borrow my old needle type wrench. You don't live that far away.

Neither do I. I did them tight, but not too tight. No probs with mine.

Haynes manual says 1/16 of a turn after the plugs seat is the maximum you should tighten them if not using a torque wrench.

Yeah thats about what I did, so its cool! I used to changed the plugs on my topaz all the time to find the best ones, so I just got used to it. The only thing was when I first did them on the contour, I was not used to how hard it was to get at them on the Dura and how clean everything was. I ran around with a blown heard gasket for a week and didn't do any damage other then nearly gave my self an oil change, went down 3 qrts! So everything was dirty as hell even after two people cleaned the bay out as good as they could....for free....

Why didn't Ford go with helicoils seeing as the heads are aluminum ??
