friend has a 95 zetec GL (just like mine) with an ATX and he has replaced the tranny 6 times since he got it new. he drives like a dead guy...10 under the speed limit wherever he goes (he is 82 years old)... first time the tranny went, he had 12k. he now has 229k and the tranny is due for a 7th replacement. its a good thing the current one is still under warranty. he got a lemon. from what i have heard most tours with ATX's arent like that. and he still owes to much on it to trade it in... he paid 23K new and has a [censored] interest rate...apart from that, i dont know why its not paid off.

damn that must suck to go though trannies like that. I would personaly have it inspected and see why they keep going out. IS it the same part each time. Does it have soemthign to do with not allowing hte car to ingauge before he hits the gas? Any leaking? ect... ect....

If he's 82 years old , I'd be more inclined to check out the mechanic, or garage , who's taking him for a ride......the trannys aren't that good , but 7 is outrageuos...

98 K, I am da first owner - everything is fine - knock knock on da wood - happened to me only once (and last I hope) that it wouldn't move when in reverse, just turned the engine off and on, and off I drove...

friend of mine has a 94 probe, i believe it uses the CD4E tranny. he's had it replaced twice and i believe he has ~150k miles, though he doesn't exactly take care of it great. he's said it's still acting up,, also all his lights on his instrument cluster blink or are lit up, so he will never know if he gets a CEL light or if he needs to check alternator, etc.

any more insight on 'trannie coolers'?? Is there one in there but you can replace with a better one?
Also, changing the transmission fluid on a trans even when not running smooth will extend the life.
I had my last car, an 89 Probe go 160k before i gave it away due from a new repair needed every week...but somehow the atx was still going...

there is a tranny cooler built into the radiator. you should add an auxillary cooler.

i think mine made it to 75000 km. was still working, but was over due for a replacement.

the clutches had came apart, water had been in the system (suspected moisture leak), torque convertor was not lookin so great

now it has a rebuilt torque convertor, all updates from ford done, shift kit, cooler, and it quite smooth. no bangs anywhere, 1-2 shift is smooth even if i take it to 6000 rpm and let off the gas. doesnt feel sloppy at all.
stock tho was horrible right from the start.

edit: the fluid had not been changed until the tranny had to be....
