I've started to have a prob with my comp and can use some help. All of a sudden whenever I click on a desktop icon; documents, my computer, internet explorer etc. it takes like 10 seconds for the window to open. My computer had been working fine and then I downloaded a ram booster program. I wasn't impressed with it so I tried to uninstall it but there was no uninstall feature and it was not listed in add/remove programs so I just deleted it and unchecked the auto start upon reboot in msconfig. I think the problem started shortly after that and I have no idea what is wrong. I don't know if maybe there was a virus in it as I have not tried virus scan yet. My comp is a dell 8100 p4 1300mhz with 384 mb rdram. My operating system is windows me. Should I try virus scan first or is there something else I can do. I would call dell tech support but the first question they will ask will be, have you added anything to your computer? Well I added 256 mb rdram but that was a couple of months ago and I've had no problems but they might insist it has something to do with it. Can they tell that I've added memory if I talk to them and give them my ref #? thx for any help and btw I'm not very skilled when it comes to computers so please try not to be so technical as I will probably not understand what your talking about. Oh, another strange thing I might add; When I click on my documents a popup also comes up from the internet and that used to never happen.

They don't need to know you added RAM if that wasn't the problem. The memory obviously had nothing to do with your problems. First thing I would do is to do a search, make sure ALL the files that came with that boost are gone. THEN do your virus search.
Another thing I do as well is I go on the net, hit ctrl alt del and see what progs are running, then look it up on the net. Usually you can find out what they are, if they are not necessary, or are from something you thought you deleted, then you can look them up, get rid of them too. I did that last week. Puter runs so much faster now. Hehehe.
Good luck

How ironic; I was just browsing the forums when i recieved a message with an error and it said internet explorer would shut down. Well when I double clicked on internet explorer to reopen it, it opened right away. I tried my documents etc. everything is fine. I have no idea what happened but it's fine now.

For the popup -- http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

What was the name of the RAM doubler?

I don't know how Dell's tech support works, but I'd be kinda surprised if they could help you with a third party program.

I don't remember the exact name of the ram program. The strange pop up when opening my documents is gone. I guess whatever was wrong is ok now.

I had the !EXACT! same problem over the past few days - when opening either IE or Windows Explorer it would take forever, and when it finally appeared, a popup window (IE) would come up along with it. I figured it had to be a virus, so I ran a full Mcafee system scan, found nothing, ran 3 different online virus scans, found nothing, used System Restore to roll Windows XP back to previous configurations, and still nothing. Then, last night around 10:00, it worked fine. I still don't know what happened.

Thats's crazy, I wonder what the hell it was. I was about to use system restore too but right before I did, it started working fine again. Strange

Agreed on the principle, but I installed nothing on my machine, it just started "happening" one day. I have no idea why.
