Can the alternator REALLY come out just by removing the DS wheel and removing the DS tie-rod end as the related older thread describes? I had a look and it appears REALLY tight...

I have 70,000 KM and would like to replace the alternator on spec soon for reliability and rebuild the old one as a spare.

Better to do a bit of PM than get stranded or have to do the job in the middle of winter....

Anyone have any history on how log these last on this car?

I have not seen that many that have needed to be changed. I have 164,000 miles on my SVT with the original alternator.

Yes, it will come out with just removing the right wheel and disconnecting the tie rod. Yes, it is still tight. Some insist on removing the right CV shaft instead of the tie rod and it does give a bit more room, but it is not necessary.

The hardest part is getting the upper bolt loose.

I had to replace mine at 100,000 miles. It is a major pain in the ass but with tons of extensions and swivels you can get it out. I took the drive shaft, shock and tie rod off to do it. I think it took me about 2 hours to do. I also had a 5 foot deep pit to drive the car over. I think that helps alot. Good Luck..

Replaced mine at 49000 miles. cost an arm and leg for the part. It had to be special ordered from the mainland.

Ford Tech here,
I have seen alternators replaced on 2.5's before.
As far as I know you have to remove the PASSENGER side wheel
the pass. side driveshaft and bracket. the y-pipe. and the pass. side splash shield in the wheel well to gain easy access to all the bolts. more work but it will be easier.
