Hey, this is a bit off the contour, but I have an odd electrical problem with a 92 Escort with 1.9 I4. I have a contour myself, but my friend has this escort. We replaced battery about 3 months ago. The new one now does not seem to be working. It's completely dead when you turn on the key. After you jump it off, the car will die when stepping on the brake pedal and the tachometer will bounce up to the 6 or 7. Sometimes turning on the lights will just kill the car. It doesn't happen consistently but I feel that there is a short somewhere. The alternator works fine under load. The car will run fine with all accesories on and idling. It will just inconsistently die when tapping the brakes or turning on the lights and the tachometer shoots way up and then back to 0 when the engine has died. Was this a common problem on early 90 model escorts? Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks for any input.
