The archives had some discussion/speculation on this topic, but the definitive link I found

apparently has expired.

At that time, Big Jim said it's his understanding the Duratec is an "Interfearence" Engine. Unless that was an inside joke that went over my head, I assume that should have read "Interference" Engine. Whatever -- given the big-buck consequences of up to 24 hammered valves due to catastrophic timing chain failure, "InterFEARence" probably is more appropriate.

So, does the Duratec NOT have recessed valves? Will the valves get hammered if the timing chain(s) fails? If so, what is the recommended mileage for timing-chain/tensioner replacement?

My '98 EO has 52.5K on the clock and was converted to Amsoil 100% synth when I got it at 17K.

Interference by the name means that the valves and the pistons occupy the same space. It's just the timing that makes it so they do not hit.

So yes "technically" if the chains ever failed there would be a mess. (No "known/for certain" chain failures to date though!)

I would not worry about the chains.
If you are in the 150-200k range on the stock engine I might start thinking about them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but non-interference engines have spaces or shaping in the top of the piston to accomodate the valves in the event of a catastrophic fail.

You are wrong to use that as a point of reference.
The valve reliefs cut into the pistons are only done on engines that require it so the 2 parts do not meet while moving. It still can be an interference or non-interference engine.
For instance the 3L Duratec has valve reliefs cut in the pistons due to the close tolerances and it's an interference engine.

Hope to not be above 150K for quite some time. Thanks, Demon.

I stand corrected !!
