The name-brand 195deg thermostat that I ordered from JC Whitney doesn't look exactly like the old 180deg thermostat. But it seemed to fit in the housing just fine, so I tried it out. No dice. Heater didn't work and engine overheated. So I had to put the old one back in, and it works fine.
The stock thermostat has an extra spring/plunger assembly on the back of it. The new one from JC Whitney didn't have this extension piece. Was I supposed to yank it off the old thermostat and stick it on the new one? Or did JC Whitney send me a bad one? Thanks!!

Mani: Regarding wp replacement there's a good thread on that subject going on now, that kellyh started, particularly the last few posts.
JohnZim63: On the thermostat: and why were we replacing it? and why with a different temp? Best check of thermostat operation is still to boil on stove in pot of water. As much fun as watching paint dry or grass grow combined, but effective. Was your old thermo the original one? I have never replaced mine and am surprised its 180 deg.

I'd read that it's a good idea to replace it when doing a drain/flush/fill or waterpump replacement. I did both. 190deg was the consensus on CEG.

Thanks, I'll try that on the Gates unit, if only to satisfy my curiosity.

I was also surprised. I'd thought 190 for temperate climate.
But what about that plunger/extensor/thingee that I mentioned? Is that normally included only with a 180 degree thermostat?? Thanks for your input!!!

The spring & plate assy on the end of the stat is a by pass valve,if you look where it seats you will see its over the heater hose inlet, without that valve the flow will be messed up....

Terry has explained 'stat configuration, he's obviously been there, done that. However on temp I would have stuck with OEM temp spec, the days of summer/winter thermostats disappeared about the time I was driving my 2nd new Camaro in '69 (1st in '67). Motors prefer one temp; it's people that like heat in winter, cool in summer.
Regards.

Damned if I know; the '97 service manual shows only one part #8575 for 'stat implying its only one thing.
