im assumin its an MTX...you may have a bad clutch, or you may have siezed the gears on the tranny? if you push the clutch in, will the car roll backward or forward? if so, chances are your clutch is still okay.

If the clutch still works normally (it still engages and disengages), I would sayit sounds like the shifter linkage broke or came loose. If the shifter moves back and forth in the gate easily that is probably the case. If you are mechanically inclined at all, you can see the shifter mechanism under the aircleaner on top of the trans and might bea ble to see what is happening. Might be as simple as a pin came out or something.

It was still in gear as I rolled from about 40 mph to the nearest parking lot with the clutch in. It seems as though the shifter is dislodged. when I let go of the clutch the car went right back into second gear. (I did slam it into gear pretty hard....I was impressed with how good that shift to second went...problem was getting it out)

ok so its a tranny problem, i didnt even think of the linkage...good call. that is most likely what is wrong, the linkage is loose or came dislodged. always embarrassing to see a contour driver on the side of the road with his hood up on the cell phone...sorry to hear it.

yes....or Im assuming its second cuz thats the last gear that I was in. It felt like once I got there it would not leave second even though the shifter was "limp" but the clutch grabbed the gear just fine. It was the only reason I was able to coast. Thank You clutch. Like I said the shifter moves (as though it is going from 1st to second but there is no reaction its just .....well....limp!

Will that also keep it from moving side to side in neutral position?
