I hope you guys can help me before I tear apart the engine!
Thanks in advance.
Took it into the dealership for it not going into OD, got a tranny flush and they told me it was the engine that is not allowing the car to get into 4th. He said the cpu will not shift if it does not have the power to shift into OD.
Car has been missing under load, going up hills, getting on it etc, etc.. But it idles smoothly and seems to run great if no load it put on it. I had a recent tune up and passed emissions, car has 127K Duratec and now I am suspecting it to be a bad ignition coil. I didn't have time to pull the codes from the CEL, but I'm sure it will show multiple misfires.
Any idea if I should get a new coil and see if she stops missing. WHat other cause are there, I've been trying to narrow down all the possibilities.
THANKS!

For a misfire, you already mentioned the coil, but also look at plugs and wires. Do you know the last time plugs were done? If you end up changing plugs, get the Motorcraft OEM plugs (forgot the part number) or their Autolite equivalents (APP764 for my Duratec).
EDIT: I should say that if you're having enough power loss that it won't shift into 4th, then you either have multiple plugs that are fouled to the point they're not firing, multiple wires that have disintegrated to the point of not firing, or a coil pack that's not working any more. My money is on the coil pack, but keep in mind that plugs are cheap (APP764's were $4 apiece for me) wires are a little more expensive ($60 for the set) and the coil pack is pricey (over $100 IIRC). If you don't mind spending the money on a tune up, try plugs first, then wires. If you end up having to replace the coil pack anyway at least you'll have part of a proper tune up done, too.

Thanks for the help guys! My pop took the car to a tune up at pepboys, so I know those are relatively new. (I know, why pepboys? I was out of town and he just went without asking me!)
Onto the ignition coil, I guess. I hope this solves the problem. I was considering taking apart the UIM and TB and cleaning them. But a dirty engine would stumble at all rpms. And this idles very smoothly.
Thanks for the help!

No offense to your father, but YIKES! Pepboys... Do you know what kind of plugs they put in? Many people don't know that the Duratec requires double-platinum plugs, and knowing the track record of Pepboys I wouldn't be surprised if they put in single platinum or, even worse, plain copper.
I know this from experience. I put in Splitfire plugs which started to wear after about 4 months. I'm sure that if I let them go much longer I would've had similar problems to yours. After replacing them in October with the Autolites its been running like a champ. Could you dig up the invoice from the work or maybe even pull one of the plugs to check, just to make sure? I don't mean to be a nag about it, but I'd rather you check and be sure so you spend less money...

Not having enough power to get into 4th is pretty weak. My car became totally gutless over 3K when the cats were clogged up. Have you had the pre-cats checked out?

Would clogged cats create the same feeling as a misfire, though? He mentioned that it felt like it was missing going up hills and stuff. I've never dealt with failing cats before...

The car passed emissions in CA so if a cat was clogged I should not have passed right?
Well I guess, I'll pull the plugs and replace the coil.
Any idea if I need to pull off the manifold? If I need to do I need to put any adhesives on the new gaskets?
Thanks
