I did the timing belt and tensioner on my mom's '97 Contour "Sport" a few weeks ago. I noticed that the bearings in the two lower idlers (especially the smaller one) were rough, so I went to my Ford dealer and got new ones. My question is, what size socket is used to take these off?? I've tried every size metric and SAE socket I have, it seems like it should be somewhere between 14-17mm, but none of them fit. Is this some kind of oddball Torx bolt or something?!?!
Thanks! Scott Marencic LDPosse@juno.com

Scott: Are you saying neither a 15mm nor a 16mm fit or that you don't have those sizes? Unfortunately the service manual I have doesn't give bolt sizes.

I tried every size from 10 to 19 mm, I have a complete set of SAE and Metric sockets. It seems like somewhere around 15 or 16 should work, but it ends up that the socket is too small to fit on the bolt, or the socket is too big to fit in the hole in the pulley.. I don't see why this is, I'm using 3/8" drive sockets, and the sides aren't very thick.... Maybe I need sockets with even thinner walls (i.e. the socket's OD is smaller for the same bolt size), and it's just a tight fit.

Well they do sell "thin-walled" sockets, so it may be that you need a 16mm one, which is equivalent to 5/8". Also if bolt head is recessed and out of sight a small mirror might help you see what your trying to get a grip on. I presume you have a manual to lead you thru' this job 'cause it looks complicated in my book. Weird you have to add a spring with a new belt.
Good luck.
Edit: Simultaneous post seems to confirm your initial suspicions.
