My tranny on my 96 mystique 2.0l just crapped out.
I was driving and it went like neutral no ,matter where i shifted it. Sometimes it will grab and others it revs like in neutral. What could it be?
Fluid is fine. Is this common?

I've read that the valve body is weak on the CD4E automatic in the contours. Mine has been fine so far, so I don't have any direct experience. The shifting is controlled via computer and the neutral position switch may be a cause, but I can't verify this off the top of my head. There is a group buy on a valve body kit which may help out. Resetting the computer fixed some rough shifting on mine, so may be worth a try.

mine did that, tranny is "pooched" take it to ford, hope its under warranty, and get you a "NEW" (my *******) transmission.


*fixed* 1998.5 Contour SE Zetec
No Cat, SVT Dual Exhaust, 2 N1 Mufflers, IAT , Diablo Chip, Iceman Intake, Polished TB, "new tranny"

Various other crap, no more mods for a while, just moved.

17.391 @ 81.03 mph

1995 Honda Civic CX Hatchback

15.34 @ 91.67mph

Mine did the same thing, 2400 dollers to fix, hence the new 2002 Mitsuibishi Lancer.

Maybe Ford should take responsablity for this.

If FORD took responsibility for everything they should, there wouldn't be a FORD left to do business with.

How many miles you got ?
CD4E usually doesn't go bad on the 4 cyl Tours, just the Duratec Tours.

Has it EVER been serviced ??

Chances are that it is a bad solenoid, or the shift position selector sensor.

welcome to the dead atx club....as was said hope u got a warranty....or deep pockets...bill for mine was 2700....including motor mounts (car feels worse than before), waterpump and thermo (these under warr too) and various hoses clamps diagnostics....tranny fluid and coolant plus flushes for both the total was 4100....i paid 823 and change out of pocket and extended warr paid the rest....otherwise i'd be riding a 10 speed...do they still make 10 speeds???


95 contour se...dark blue...monsterflow air filter...remanuf atx...wiring harness recall or bust!!!96k miles...motorcraft awsf32pp plugs & red ford racing 9mm wires...kvr black plated cross-drilled rotors & carbon fiber pads...currently undergoing renovation...excuse our dust!!!
