okay, what is the most likely culprit...

CEL comes on, stays on for a week or so...

then it goes off, stays off for awhile... when light is on performance seems to drop off, but not too much

i have a weapon R intake and a Shoshop catless ypipe... thanks for help if any...

I think if you start messing with the emission systems on the cars it affects the performance.
could be the o-2 sensors.
But don't quote me on that.

Without the fault code from the PCM, it's hard to be accurate. First "guesses" would be gunked up EGR, dirty MAF sensor, and then bad upstream O2 sensors. (I just see that Nate beat me to it :p )

I heard that if the gas cap does not provide a good vacuum, then performance will drop and according to the Contour manual the CEL will reset itself after three engine restarts.

I'm no mechanic, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I would just pay the $130 for the code reader, you will probably read a code more than 1 time, so that will pay for itself after 2 readings from the dealer. Sometimes Autozone/Napa/O'reilly will read your code for you for free, so you might want to check a few stores and see if one of them will do it for free. -Nick

Most often, the CEL is an oxygen sensor light, especially when it turns itself 'off'. If mine stays on and everything 'seems ok' I reconnect the battery and allow the computer to re-learn its settings. The worst I've experienced is the 'OSL' was intermittant until 're-learning' finished.
