I have a tapping sound coming from the left side of my engine (I have a 1996 Contour SE 2.5L V6 Duratec engine).

I thought that the sound was coming from somewhere around the serpentine belt area, but I had a neighbor (that is always out working on one of his four cars) come over and take a look. He said that he thought that it was a lifter or valve that was stuck because of carbon buildup. He suggested getting an oil additive that would clean the lifters and valves and see if that would do the trick.

Last night, I bought CD-2 oil detergent. I took the car for a drive and then my wife went to the supermarket. This morning I started the car and the sound seems to be gone, but every once in a while it comes back, but much fainter than originally. I plan on buying another bottle of CD-2 oil detergent tonight.

I have the following questions:
- Could this tapping sound damage anything?
- Is this is a common problem?
- Could this be from carbon buildup?
- Could this cause the "check engine" light to come on? If so, how can I reset the check engine light?

Thanks ahead of time for any and all help.

Not carbon buildup...either a finger follower on the cam or a hyd lash adjuster..worse case...t/chan tensioner /lash....

Terry:

Thanks for the quick response. I have a few questions:

- What is a finger follower?
- What is a hyd lash adjuster? Does hyd stand for hydraulic?
- What is t/chan tensioner /lash?
- Are any of these problems serious (like it can ruin the engine)?
- Are they simple fixes?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I am an amateur wanna-be mechanic trying to learn the trade.

A finger follower is what rides the cam and hydraulic lash adjuster to make the valves move down.

The hydraulic lash adjuster is what pumps up to push the finger follower up against the cam to follow it's profile.

Either of these problems are easily fixed if the damage isn't to far gone. You'll need to pull the intakes and the valve covers to get at them. A mechanic's stethascope (SP?) can be helpful in finding which bank the sound is coming from. Be careful of moving parts using one though!!!

Changing the tensioner or timing chain is much more of a task for a beginner and probably better left to a professional. It involves removing the front timing cover, valve covers, intakes, etc just to get at them. Then there's the task of re-timing the cams again which is hard enough to explain to a seasoned car nut.

My bets??? Stuck lash adjuster. If the oil medic adative truely did anything, it was probably freeing up a stuck adjuster. I can't see where something like that would help the timing assembly since the chain would still have slop in it and the chain tensioner is mechanical, not hydraulic. Take it apart now and check it out if you want it done right and plan on keeping the car. The damage may already be done... You don't want to totally stick one of these parts or you'll end up with small parts bouncing around in the head destroying other parts. wink

As always, referr to CEG FAQ and your repair manuals to find out how to go about taking things apart and putting them back together. If you tackle a specific job, ask here or in the general forum for more tips and tricks.
