How is the C5 Z06 Corvette have such a good Cd despite the lack of spoiler and air foil, and the sharp rear window angle?

Cd is derectly proportional to frontal cross-sectional area, so seeing as the Corvette is so low and squat it's frontal area is small in comparison to it's length. Plus it sits low to the ground so not much air can get under it = less undebody induced drag/turbulence.

It doesn't need a spoiler because the sharp lip on the end of the trunk breaks off the airflow without causing tubulence.

IIRC there is an air dam under the car that pulls air out and basically sucks the car to the ground.

This is pure speculation, so PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong!

Cd is the coefficent of drag. The lower the number the more aerodynamic the car is. A spoiler would disrupt the airflow to provide downforce at higher speeds. By the same token, the disrupted airflow would also increase the coefficent of drag.

Spoiler does increase drag (and weight).

Spoiler: Disrupts air flow to lower lift.

Wing: Airfoil to increase downforce

Technically the spoiler reduces lift (Upforce) while the wing creates lift but downward (Downforce).

Most people use the terms interchangeably, but there is actually a difference.

Having said that, since no moving air actually hits the factory spoiler (at least on my 'tour) because of its location, it is just cosmetic.

other fast cars that don't have ridiculous spoilers and wings:

Acura NSX
Audi S3, S4, RS4, S6, RS6, S8
BMW M3, M5
Honda S2000

Just goes to show that excessive wings and spoilers are really more for SHOW!

I was referring to the slope of the C5 Z06's rear glass when I was referring to the "spoilers and air foils"...the cars mentioned have very different body shapes.

Drag is a factor of Cd, frontal area, and speed. Cd is independent of area.

OH! So it does have a spoiler, I just could not see it in the picture. I have not seen any Z06 C5's in person. Thanks for your help.
