Hello, I am a newbie and I just brought a 96 Contour LX with a 2.5L Duratec Engine. It has 116,000 miles on it, and it runs just fine. The problem is with the check engine light. It came on shortly after I brought it. I took it to my mechanic and he told me that I have CEL code P0153, P0171, and P0174. Does this mean I have a Lemon? What should I so? Also my car has traction control but the light never comes on. I think it works because I herd a loud noise while driving in the snow. Is the light dead? Can some one help me? Thanks!!!

P0153 Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor circuit Slow Response - Bank No. 2.

P0171 System Too Lean - Bank No. 1.

P0174 System Too Lean - Bank No. 2.

Sounds like you need to replace an O2 sensor. These routinely give out after 100000, so no, I don't think you have a lemon. As far as the TCS, I don't have that option, so I can't help you there.

Why don't you have a look at your oxygen sensors, perhaps they have not been replaced yet. If they look fairly new, you probably have a leak in the intake ducting, or perhaps your MAF is dirty. Something is causing the engine to run a little lean.

Welcome onboard.

T/C light should come on when you switch t/c off. Should also come on when activated by road conditions. System is on by default at start-up

I pressed the T/C Off button and nothing shows up. I am assuming that the light is dead. But I could be wrong (I Hope I am right). It isn't a big problem, just curious about its cause. This web site is very usual for contour users. I just found it while searching on google. I am going back to my mechanic to check out those codes and the O2 Sensor. I thought for a second that I had a lemon. Otherwise I love the car, it's my first. I paid $3,000 for it. It has a V6 2.5L Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) Engine with Sunroof and obviously TCS. I just put in a CD Player. I was nervious about buying it because it has about 116,000 miles. But my mechanic tells me that it will last over 200,000 miles if I take good car of it. Thanks for your help!!!

Having both of these codes at once probably means that you have a vacuum leak. It usually ends up that you have to replace the UIM gasket. The two gaskets themselves run around $30-40. If you are mechanically inclined, you can probably do the work in a few hours.

Check the following:

You can probably find a lot more threads if you use the search and/or archive search features.
