I'm trying to figure out what's going on with my brothers 2.5L Cougar. The CE light is on and I pulled a P0401 code which is insufficient EGR flow. I took off the TB and cleaned the EGR ports. Car has 47k on it and no modifications. The CE light took 80 miles to come back after cleaning. I replaced the fuel filter, changed plugs and wires also. Also at a cruise at about 30-35 at lower RPM's the car seems to be hesitating. I hate to keep throwing parts on this thing. I think I just might have him take it to the stealership. Could the EGR valve have crapped already? Is the MAF making it studder at 30-35 mph w/o any other driveability problems? If the car has a DPFE it's not in the same place as my Contour. Where the heck is it?

I had the same problem at about 25K miles on my 01 cougar. Dealer changed the sampling tubes and the DPFE sensor under warranty. My CEL came back recently for the same problem (65K miles) and I know I'll have to change it at my expense this time.
Interesting fact: I received a letter from Ford Canada last week explaining that the DPFE sensor now had an 25K miles extra coverage, that this piece has now been re-designed. Unfortunately for me, I have too much mileage to have it replaced under this warranty program. But it is good to know that Ford acknowledge that they have a problem with this piece.
In conclusion, I would say to change your DPFE sensor for a new one, and make sure you order the upgraded version.
Good luck and let us know the outcome!

Oh that's good to know. Where is the DPFE on the 01? I don't see it in the same location as my Contour.

Don't know where it is - so just follow the two hoses from the EGR tube, to it.
