A few weeks ago, I noticed a noise coming from my driver side front wheel as I was driving. It sounded like something was sticking. I could best describe it as a clicking sound every time the wheel completed a revolution. Quickly, the noise developed into a squeal when the brake pedal was applied. More recently, I noticed that the squeal was ever-present and was only silenced when the brakes were applied. A few days ago, the squeak started to get louder, and whenever I was braking from 10 mph or so I would hear and feel a hefty grinding coming from the brakes. Mind you that the car still stops on a dime. I used to own a Toyota, and the thing went through brakes faster than some people go through oil changes, so I have a general idea of how pads and rotors normally wear. This is something new to me. Lastly, I'll mention that I pulled off the wheel yesterday to inspect the brake hardware. I noticed that the inside of the rotor was worn and grooved, yet the outer part was smooth and not warped. Also, the outer pad had about 40% of the meat left. I'm foggin clueless. Any ideas? As always, any help is appreciated.

I just went through this with one of my back wheels. The dealership I go to concluded it was the brake so they changed the pads and resurfaced the rotors. since my car had only 36000 miles on it and me and my service advisor agreed the wear was a bit premature, they only charged me for the pads and they covered the rotors. Well the squeak/tick is gone. Strange though, my car stopped on a dime too while I had the problem.

Squealing without brakes being applied is generally the wear indicator on the pad saying it's time for pad replacement.

Update:
My car is in the shop. I need new rotors and pads. Supposedly the car was fully serviced before I took delivery on it back in may. Blue oval strikes again, eh? Oh well, I'm off to scribe a check for $359.00 for new brake hardware and an inspection.

I think I'm going to hurl.
