The threads inside my oilpan are completely stripped (no threads) because some jerk at a local oil change shop screwed up large.

How can I fix this problem without replacing the oilpan? One friend stated I could get the oilpan tapped (where they will re-thread the hole with a bigger hole and use a bigger plug). After talking to a guy at Ford he mentioned that this was not possible because my my oilpan is aluminum...is that true?

If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks
Derek

helicoil it, or use and oversized drain plug! at any local auto parts store, or go to pep boys in the oil change aisle! easy and simple fix

You certainly can rethread aluminum (gee, think the guy at Ford wanted to sell you an oil pan?). I mean really, does that guy think the threads are cast in or something? They had to be tapped at some point.

Helicoil (oversized threaded insert) would work well, and you might be able to reuse your old drain plug. You basically drill and tap the hole larger and put the insert in. Some kits come with the tap you need as well, and you do it by hand.

I know the box of drain plugs at work contains some that are self-tapping for just this situation. Can't comment on how well they work, but they do exist.

Best to get a rubber replacement plug which, when inserted and tightened, expands to prevent leakage. Canadian Tire sells them, under $10.
Helicoil used for cases, like spark plug holes, where you wish to end up with the original thread size. This not required with oil drain hole as there are many aftermarket devices that self thread into damaged threads. These are usually used when oil pan can be easily removed, since you don't want metal filings remaining in the oil pan.

Just a thought, but I think the repair is the oil change shop's problem, not yours. They should spring for the repair.

they sell rubber plugs for stripped oil pans.. you put the rubber plug in and tighten the bolt and it expands so there is no longer a leak........
