whats the difference between the two? I just got my car tested today on the dynamometer and I wasn't impressed with the numbers at all, actually its embarrassing to post the results. but the guy at the shop kept on telling me that those are good number for my car and how the dynamometer calculates power differently from the dyno jets. i dont think i will have a 30% power loss after all of my mods form the stock 170hp.

I'm pretty sure DynoJet is a brand name and Dynamometer is just the term used for a device that measures a vehicles power. But dont quote me on it.

There are Mustang and DynoJet Dynomometers, Mustang are usually a bit tougher on the numbers. Not sure how many other manufactures of Dynomometers there are...

it was a mustang dynamometer, so how much tougher is it compared to the dyno jet?

Good discussion about the difference between Mustang and DynoJet Dynos here:
http://osr.albeeno.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=588
Scroll to about halfway down the first page to skip the junk

Quote:

Mustang dyno's will always give you a LOWER number than a DynoJet. Why? Because Dynojet's were the first dyno's aimed at the tuner crowd, and to have your car read 10-15% more HP than on any other dyno is a good marketing plan.

Another reason Dynojet's aren't that great, is that they are simpler and a lot less accurate. Honestly, would you rather tune your $50,000 blown 383 with accuracy, or marketing hype ?

The Mustang Dyno uses an "Eddy Current" drive that let's you tell the dyno operator the weight of your car. It can simulatea true 1/4 mile pass. The DynoJet just spins a "known mass" - some higher-hp cars only get a 2-second pull on a dynojet!!!

A Dynojet can only take measurements at WOT due to its design.

A Mustang dyno is capable of holding a certain torque and allows you to tune at different loads and throttle settings. Much more robust than a Dynojet.

I don't know exactly what is meant by rougher on the numbers when comparing the two, but I guess it means that there is a bit more measurement error on a Mustang???

Of course, the Mustang is also a bit pricier than a Dynojet AFAIK, so the customer pays more to use it. For example, I can do 2 hours of tune with wideband A/F on my local Dynojet for $200 or so. The local Mustang dyno wants $150/hr plus another $75 to fit a wideband O2 before the runs.

Also, a 'dynamometer' is the name for the measurement device. Sort of like saying 'ruler' or 'thermometer'. Dynojet and Mustang are brand names of the devices. Those are the two common ones for what we want to do. (There are companies that manufacture chassis dynos for emissions tests, but it's not relevant here.)

Yah i just figured that out, the guy at the shop confused me because he kept on referring to the Dynamometer and the DynoJet, making it sound like the dynamometer is a brand.

Thanks Chlorine for the link it helped understanding some of the differences, i guess the weight and aerodynamics of the car are not included in the dynojet to simulate street-like conditions.

just a fact i learned today at the dyno shop our cars lose 11hp at 55mph to wind resistance(aerodynamics) alone.
BTW i only paid $72cnd for the dyno with a/f readings (1.5 hrs).

so how do you calculate the power to the flywheel with the mustang dyno.

I live in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Mustang Dynamometer is located in Twinsburg, OH, which is about 15 minutes away. So what does this have to do with this post?

I help out at my local dyno shop www.bigshotdyno.com and this shop is in Hudson, OH, right next to Twinsburg, OH. A few weeks ago, the shop gets a call from some guys at Mustang Dynamometers to set up some testing. Let's just say I don't think the guys from Mustang Dynamometer took one picture of their test Viper.

That tells me a lot about their dynos.
