Cruising at low speeds I hear a metal-to-metal noise kinda like someone sharpening a knife with a wetstone. No change in sound when brakes applied. Seems to have appeared after driving through deep snow a couple weeks ago and my wife going through huge mud puddles at her work. She came home one day and it looked like that picture of Ray McNairy's car on the CEG website. I mean, it looked like someone used the fog light holes to scape the mud off the bottom of their shoes! Took $24 to spray the underside clean!
ANYWAY, I think it's the wheel bearing. Any thoughts?

By my experience a bad wheel bearing will have a lower-pitched moaning that manifests itself at higher speeds and when turning in a particular direction. For example, my right-front bearing was bad, so I could hear it when turning left because the weight of the car shifts to the right side. The sound was noticeable at about 35mph, and got really loud at 70mph.
Does any of this sound like what you're experiencing? I suppose if the bearing is really shot you might start hearing it all the time, but I don't know if it would still moan, or if it would sound like the scraping you describe.

Now that oyu mention it, yes, I did notice a groan turning left. Haven't hit the freeway in a while, so I don't know about the high speed noise. Thanx!

I would recommend a short jaunt on the freeway just to confirm the sound. At the very least you may be able to distinctly tell which side its coming from.
Also, just in case it is the bearing and you take it in, I had Sears do mine for about $140. I had independent shops quote up to $250, so shop around! Also, if the hub is damaged at all expect higher prices.

How are the rear bearings configured (rear disc, 99 SE)? I've got a similar problem, but it sounds like it's coming from the rear.
