hi,

This weekend I want to do the "squeak fix" by greasing the stabilizer bar in the rear. The "how to" guide warns not to overtorque bolts when refastening.

I don't have a torque wrench. Is there any way to estimate torque (hand tight, two turns past tight, etc)? Or am I asking for trouble?

The "how to" says...

[The correct torque is, for the brackets 14-19 lb-ft., and for the links it is 22-30 lb-ft., anything more than that will damage the bushings and stretches the bolts which could fail under hard cornering.]

Thanks.

Check with a local auto parts store chain and see if they rent out tools. If they do, I bet they will have a torque wrench. Most of the time all you have to leave is a deposit, then after you return it, you get your deposit back. At least that is the way Autozone does it.

Yes, you are asking for trouble. Torque specs are not pulled out of the air. You want to stretch those bolts just right -- not too little and not too much.

A basic, torque wrench (you know, with dual rods and a dial-indicator with an "arrow" pointer) costs maybe $15. As long as the arrow points to zero before any load is placed on it, the tool is properly calibrated. If nothing else, pony up the money for a basic torque wrench. You'll be in much better shape than trying to guesstimate (which you can't reliably do, anyway).

And besides, anyone who works on their own car should have one.

might I suggest that we officially dub this the "DUBKATZ MANOEUVRE"? I like it, think it might stick.

This is how a true survivalist would approach this- take a crushable material (clay, plastigauge, any kinda putty), roll it into a rod, put that across your fingers and pick up a 20lb weight. Voila', you have a torque measurement. Repeat when grasping wrench. Yes, I'm nuts, but hey I'm not too cheap to buy a torque wrench either.

that would only work accurately if he had a 1' long ratchet.

why not just use a 1' ratchet and hang the desired weight off it?
