I was driving my '96 'Tour on the interstate in slightly hilly conditions with the cruise on ..it kicked down a couple of times ( I'm used to that) , but all of a sudden the overdrive light started blinking....got it home , checked fluid ( right on the button )....turned it off for a few mins. , started it back up , went for a ride , light stayed off....anybody else ever heard of this happening??

It may be a sign of a transmission related problem. I'd suggest getting it checked out to make sure you don't have bigger problems later on.

Hey there! I had the same problem with my 98 sport se atx. It did the exact same thing you described. I took it into my dealership where i work (ford). My problem was a shorted main wire harness. 2 broken motor mounts. But the main problem was the bad shift solenoid pack. I had it covered under warranty with a $500 deductible. I would get it scanned at autozone or somewhere for free. trouble code will be P1741,P1742,P1743 for torque converter clutch solenoid malfunction if this is your problem. post the code here we will try and help.

My personal experience posted in this recent thread:
Click
Do a search on o/d light, but I'm afraid there's no definitive answer I've seen to-date. Solutions range from rebuild to cases like mine. Unfortunately there are few inexpensive atx repairs.

I've actually heard of this happening before. The light will blink for a little while then just go away. It may be a prognostication of a future problem, so just keep an eye on things and take it in when she starts to give you any problems. I had a tranny rebuild back in October, and my rear still hurts from the raping. The fluid was never changed by the previous owners and I think I bought the car with a failing tranny

That happened to me one time. It was shifting just fine then all of a sudden it jerked a bit then the light flashed. I got scared and pulled over, opened the hood and there was trans fluid seeping from the vent on top of the tranny. I checked the fluid and it was down. I added more and then it was fine. I later had the fluid changed, replaced the tranny cover with fords transmission vent replacement kit, and added a bottle of high mileage transmission fluid additive. It has been fine ever since. The kit comes with a new cover and a hose that attaches to the cover where the vent used to be. You run the hose up to the battery area and it is susposed to "fix" the problem. Why it happend I have no idea. Mabey if was hot, there was a fluid blockage/backup?, I dont know. Good Luck.

I never have any codes that will show up, not even ford can get them too, I will go in to schucks with a blink CEL and it will still blink as I try to read it, and I get no output. Took it to ford and they said there was nothing. I think the pos is broken.

Hi there, I also had this problem with the o/d light in my 97 Mystique.I took it to ford and they say they couldn't find anything. But after I got the car back it's not flashing and I haven't had it do it now in 2 months! Wierd...but I think it's one of those added little mysteries that come with the car....trust me I've had all kinds of wierd problems with my car and I've only had it for 4 months!!! My 1st Ford.!
