Thanx! I am absolutely amazed about the amount of help we receive on this forum. I searched for MAF cleaning but didn't see anything about wether or not you take it off the car. Like I said, I am new to modern car repair. 90% of my experience has been with my '67 truck. I mean, you can count the number of wires in the engine bay on two hands and hoses and tubes on one! I love that thing. SOmething breaks and 99% of the time I know exactly what it is!

ANyway, thanx alot!

You dont use brake cleaner to clean a MAF.. if you do you will ruin it... the info i have is that windex was used to clean it off if needed and the applicator was a Q-tip applicator...... you got to be very gentle with it as its a microscopic wire wrapped around a small ceramic tube and if you break the wire you have to replace it.... you might just want to look at it to see if its dirty???

MAF cleaning....been there done that many times.

Best thing to do, take it off the car! Second thing, let it cool some. What to use? I have tried the three that have been suggested. 1) Electronics cleaner...left some film. 2)Brake cleaner..didn't have, used gumout choke cleaner....didn't fix and was not sure I was convinced that it cleaned it. 3) B-12 Chemtool....ahhhh....like it! Used it on the IAT for example and sprayed it a couple times, cleaned it right up. I think though if you suspect the O2 sensor....you have the codes to back it up, then change it first. The other things to look for would be degrading performance, sluggish acceleration...especially when cold.

But I can't recommend enuff the Chemtool...gotta thank whoever said to use it!!! Wal-Mart has it in the automotive section. Get the spray with the red tube, try not to touch the MAF sensor if you can help it. The reason is that it is SOOO delicate you can do wonderful things with calibrations if you aren't careful and yes, I was being sarcastic.

Also, don't get too crazee with the cleaner. Clean it, inspect it, let it dry! If need be, repeat this step.

Well, I pulled the MAF and cleaned it with this:
www.rauckman.com/rainpdf/41030.pdf <PDF reader required
It's what I used to clean telecom equipment when I worked for Noretel. I had a few cans lying around and figured if it's safe enough for circuit boards it wouldn't hurt the MAF.

I read somewhere that the CEL can turn it self off but if you still have the problem it will come back after 40 driving cycles. I may have interpreted what I read wrong. If the CEL comes back on in the next couple of days I'll replace the O2 sensor.

Thanx for all the input!
