I have a 98 Contour, 2.0L motor, auto trans.
After I start the car, put it in drive or reverse and move several feet, I'll hear something that sounds like an electic motor noise for several seconds. It sounds like the windshield washer motor, only louder. Someone mentioned it could be the torque converter equalizing, but I'm skeptical becuase it sounds like an electric motor.
Any ideas? This is very strange...

Well, the fuel pump runs when you turn the key but it only lasts a few seconds. Can check it out by simply turning the key to the on position without cranking the engine.

I found these two posts elsewhere. Seems to make sense. It only happens after I start the car and then only after I've started to drive a few feet. How do I know if my car has ABS brakes??
"If it sounds like a low moan or kind of like a mooing sound it is probably the ABS brake self test at around 8mph 1x/ign start. It lasts about 1-2 sec and you should not hear it again until you cycle the ignition or have an ABS stop."
"Additionally, the ABS (if equipped) will activate momentarily the first time you reach about 5 mph after starting the engine."

Yellow ABS light on the dash when you turn the ignition on. Light turns off when ABS proves out on startup.

I have to disagree with the fuel pump. It should only be heard before startup, not afterwards, unless the insulation is inadequate or has fallen off(which should not cause a fuel problem). he said it lasted for a few seconds after the car was started, the pump would continue to be heard. I'm gonna have to go with antenna, if it is the motorized kind. I've never heard of the ABS self test making noise, so I can't comment on that. Maybe also the blower motor? see if any air is coming out of the vents at startup. Could be spazing out. Does on my dads truck $.02 Mike
