Hello, I was wondering....
I just bought this 98 SVT, it seems to be kinda slow to respond, like the timing is retarded. I can kick the gas pedal when it's idleing and it doesn't rev-up very fast.

It has 63K miles on it, the orginal plug wires and I *think* the plugs have been changed. The only mods are KKM and removed resonator.

Any ideas? Is it the car or is it just me? (I switched from a 2001 Mustang GT, to this.)

Thanks, Matt.

Well...

If you quickly tap the gas, with the window down, you will hear the TB open up, and a "rush" of air flow in to the engine. This is not to be confused with the engine revving. If you listen carefully you will hear the air sound JUST before the engine revs. THEN you will see the tach rev up just as your foot comes up.. (keep in mind this is if you BLIP the throttle...)

So, yes, the tach is a little slow, compared to your foot...

lighter flywheel will correct this, but most will suggest a DMD, instead, as the light flywheel provides no vibration protection..

Timing is not likely to be out.

If it's only sluggish below 3k rpm, your IMRC may be stuck open.

If it's only sluggish off idle, the TPS is suspect.

If the CEL flashes it's missing, and if it stays on have the code read.

Sorry, I should have mentioned it, but I did look at the IMRC plates, and they are working.
I would say it's more like you say, "Sluggish off idle".
So how do I check the TPS?

What is the CEL? Check Engine Light? If so, It's not flashing.

THANKS! Matt.

CEL = Check Engine Light

There can be stored codes even if it's not on.

The TPS is at the end of the throttle shaft to measure it's position. It is a potentiometer and the the middle of the three contacts in it's connector will change resistance between the outside two contacts as the throttle is moved. It's best to use an analog meter to check it as glitches will be easier to spot. Hook to the middle and an outside contact and monitor the resistance as you move the throttle, resistance change should be smooth. Sometimes a dead spot happens just off idle where the throttle is during cruising.
