Guys,
I finally talked my local mechanic into changing out my WP (Ford wouldn't put any pump but their own in). My mechanic told me to get the pump I wanted and bring it to him. I got the NAPA 125-1910 plus belt, thermostat, gasket and took it and the Tour to him. At the end of the day I went to pick it up and he said "They gave you the wrong parts". I won't even repeat what the guys at NAPA said when I brought the parts back, exc. that they gave me the right parts and I knew they were right about that. Then my mechanic calls and says NO ONE has the pump to fit my car exc. Ford. I told him Autozone has one. Now he's gonna order from them. Is there something missing here? Does the replacement pump look that different, or do I need to tell him that it only replaces the front and not the whole WP? I might add that my mechanic is local, reputable, honest and has a great reputation. I'm trying to give him information that'll help him take care of my Tour without coming off like I think I'm the mechanic. Can you tell me anything I can pass on that won't p!!s him off too bad?

Having just replaced my WP with the same GMB unit, I would GUESS that your mechanic does not realize that the objective is to replace only 1/2 of the water pump, not the entire unit! Even after all 8 bolts have been removed, you have to make careful use of a chisel or "cheap screwdriver" to break the seal between the two halves of the pump - after many thousands of miles that gasket has REALLY taken a set and is practically like glue. Once the gasket seal has been separated, the two pieces will come apart and it will be obvious to your mechanic where to go from there.

Good Luck,

Jab

Jab,

A thousand thanks! I've sent the info on to my mechanic. Hopefully I'll have a new metal impellar pump in by the end of the week.
