wonder if I could get any suggestions....I was about to head home from work when I heard a big 'thump' and the rt front tire went flat. Took the tire off, it was punctured by the coil spring (which evidently broke and punctured the sidewall). Can't get the spare on, so the car sits 'til I get a tow in the morning...Should I trust it to a regular repair place or let Ford look at this? Out of warranty, so no help there. BTW the car has never been beaten. Never saw a coil spring break before....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ah ha! The SVTs are under the service action for the coil spring catchers (in salt states), but NOT eligible for free replacement if they break. So basically your screwed. I always found those two items to be contradictory.

I'd contact NHTSA if I were you. And, if finances allow, get yourself a good set of aftermarket springs/struts now that you HAVE to go in there and replace things.

Thanks for the info. It always warms the heart to hear 'you're screwed', though....yep, I'm in a salt state. Perhaps taking it straight to the SVT dealer would be better overall...if not the best for me, at least so they have another documented failure if indeed there have been similar incidents. Mods sound good but I need it repaired fast and correctly (yeah, I know..). The car handles perfectly well stock, I think. I'm just thankful I wasn't on the highway when it went.

DIY - I am sure there are quite a few sets to used SVT springs to be had for cheap or free...

Infact I have a used set of SVT front springs getting ready to see the back of a garbage truck!!

SO TRUE. I had this happen to me and I called Ford, I called SVT and I called NHTSA and none of them budged on the issue. The 98 SVT's had unique springs and were not convered under the extended spring warranty (10 years or 150,000 miles). In 99 the SVT springs were put in all V6 manual contiques because they did not exhibit the fracture failures.

I find it ironic the the replacement springs come with spring catchers stock.

well the dealer managed to (suprise!) dent my car in the process of replacing tires/struts/coils on both sides (yeah, I'm keeping it stock SVT). Waiting to have 'em fix THAT now, gratis of course, but I'm po'd. The SVT is NOT covered in the TSB although all other 'tourstiques are! Beware, Contique owners....there is a potentially lethal suprise for you. There is a TSB.....and in my case one coil broke free and went rt into my front tire....I really hope this NEVER happens to any other owners, but pls be aware your front coils should be checked/replaced as this is a known problem. Again, if I was on a highway, it woulda been a sudden and catastophic loss of steering/braking/accel. I was lucky.
