I recently moved to Las Vegas and have not had the my car thru the summer heat here. 97 Contour, Duratec, ATX, 161K and yes...still on the original water pump!

I was debating as to go to Mobil1 for oil. I've always run regular oil with the last oil change with 10W-30 instead of 5W-30. I don't know if with the advanced age of the motor if synthetic oil is best. I've always changed the oil every 3K and if I switch to synthetic, how often should I now change it? I would really like to hear from owners in the desert southwest as to what they do presently!

Thanx!

This question has been asked many time...please search the forum and check the archives....

But to give you a simple answer:

Sythetic will not damage your engine...what it does is remove the deposits left by dyno oil. in the process of removing those deposits, some gaskets may begin to leak because the deposits that were blocking the leaks were removed.

Thats the main concer people have had. The rest you can find in the many threads of this topic in the archives.

EDIT...and with all oils i personaly change mine every 5000 to 7000 miles....desert conditions should be the same change rate....some chage every 3000 miles...but that can get expensive!!!

The only reason I use syth in the engine and tranny is to take avantage of its superior flow properties in the cold winters we get here. If I lived in Vegas, I doubt I would use it in the engine, since I change at 5000kms anyway. I'd still use synth tranny fluid though since I only change it every 2 years.

another reason that sometimes you'll see leaks with synthetic oil vs non-synthetic oils is that the synthetic oil has a small molecule, about 1/2 the size of a non-synthetic.

As for brands of synthetic oil. I like AMS OIL

Not as good as Mobil 1 or AMSOil. (fact not fiction)

It's claim to fame it "supposedly" making more HP then leading oils. However they fail to tell you they mean dino oils.
It does not make more power then most other synthetics and several beat it in direct testing. (Mobil 1 & AMSOil for example)

Mobil 1 (old formula even) & AMSOil also beat it in wear testing.
They also beat it in resistance to viscocity loss too. a category which AMSOil with it's solid polymer V.I improvers shines (a double edged sword IMO)

Some folks swear by it. I would not use it personally!

The major consideration is:

Mobil 1 spec calls for a 3000 mile drain.

Amsoil 100% synth is rated for extended drain-intervals -- assuming the Amsoil oil filter or another superior oil filter (like K&N's) is used. I dump the Amsoil 5w-30 synth in my CSVT every 14,000 - 15,000 miles.

Depending on where you buy, the per-quart difference in price between Mobil 1 and Amsoil can be as little as $1.00 ... And when you consider that, in synlubes technology, Amsoil got the jump on Mobil by 20 years -- well, guess who controls the key patents?
