Hey guys,

I've recently started overfilling at oil changes because of whats been going on with the Duratecs. After the first time I overfilled, the engine runs noticably cooler all the time.

Before it would run smack in the middle of "NORMAL". Now it rarely gets past the "N" only if i've got it at 3000k for a while. It's never been past "O".

I was thinking maybe it's a bad thermostat but was just wondering if anyone else had noticed this.

I suspect that it is something other than the higher oil fill. Oil plays a very important part in engine cooling, especially on parts that the water jacket is too far away from. Oil does more than just lubricate.

However, the cooling system does more than just cool. It moderates the temperature. It keeps the engine running at the correct temp range. There is enough of a buffer designed in to more than compenste for the added cooling that the additional oil does.

Look somewhere else.

How much is it safe to overfill an engine by in general?

Different engine designs have differnet tollerances. It was not uncommon in the 60's and 70's for the factory to decide they wanted an extra quart of oil so they recalibrated the dipstick. Anything over 1/2 quart could be risky if you don't know for sure.

So - are you saying is OK to put a 1/2 quart more then what is required at each oil change?

This will not cause harm to anything?

If so, what do you base your facts on? Just wondering... I want to know for sure that this is a good idea.

Your opinions please...

I assume you were not asking me...but my guess was just based on assuming that they would allow at least that much of a fudge factor in the design.

I noticed someone in one of the other
forums said rouche did a test latley and
found that factory specs are way under.
Something like a half a quart left in
the oil pan while running. eek I'll see if I can find it.
