Perhaps a dumb question, and perhaps answered before, but I can't find anything that describes the throttle hang thing in terms of what I'm getting lately, albeit on an intermittent basis, which makes it especially maddening.

Here it is....

The revs on my car have always been somewhat slow to drop when I step on the clutch and let off the gas to shift. (This being my second 'tour, I assume this to be normal)

Sometimes, in the past couple of months, when I go to shift, the RPMs literally do "hang," that is, if they're at 4,500 when I let off the gas, they just stay there for several seconds before starting to drop, slowly.

Sometimes, if I'm cruising along in third or fourth gear, and let off the gas, the car will go along as if it's on cruise.

When this is happening, and I come to a stop and sit in neutral, it takes forever...10-20 seconds perhaps...for the revs to drop to 750.

Is this the classic throttle hang, or am I dealing with something else?

Car has about 24,000 miles on it.

It sounds to me like somehting else, though I don't know enough to even guess what, hopefully someone else can provide those answers for you.

maybe check for any leaks or cracks in our IAC valve supply hose where you would install the throttle hang fix? Also maybe check at the throttle body to see how easily the cable moves?

I had the same exact problem for 15k miles but worse, my rpms would even climb with now accelerator. I am at school now, but i will tell you what you need to get done at the ford dealer when i get home. my car feels new again and i dont have the probelm. btw, dont go too long with out fixing this problem because your clutch will get worn. if you are shifting and the rpms dont go down, you are being thrown into every gear and thats not good for the clutch, beleive me, my clutch engages really high, ill get back to you...

Thanks, h'mobile...I'll look forward to reading of your experience. I too am quite concerned about what this is doing to my clutch!

Thanks H'mobile and Yankee....

I'm heading to the dealer at the end of the week with this, armed with your intelligence. I'll let you know how things work out.

By the way, Yankee...your problem sounds identical to mine. Was yours an intermittent thing, or did it happen all the time? And you say the fix lasted only about 15K miles?

thanks again,

the fix is annoying if you dont get it right.. also, you sometimes need different sized holes for different weather

I've got a similar problem, Rev's actually pick up to about 3500, before slowly dropping to 1200 RPM.

Seems to be worse when Air Conditioning is on, or outside temperature is warm.

Will check into cost of replacing IAC Solenoid.
