my ac broke down last summer and im not sure why? I filled it up with the gas and it worked for a couple days then i just blew hot air. I ran the floresent dye through the system to check for leaks and couldnt find any with the light. I was wondering if anyone knew a way to check to see whats wrong. Weather its the compressor or the clutch to it? thanks

Check pressure in the system first. If it's low you do have a leak. Check with engine off. Pressure is dependant on ambient temperature. About 70 psi on a lukewarm day. A/C won't run if it's below 20 - 30 psi. If you can't find the leak outside (at night) look inside at the evaporator.


If there is pressure and the clutch is off, check the fuse and the low pressure cuttoff switch. If the clutch is on you should also check the temperature mixing door in the ductwork to make sure it moves. This door is moved by an electric motor an sometimes fails.

My A/C is also weird.

The clutch is not on, while I can
bypass R4 to force it to kick in.

what maybe the cause?

cutoff switch? I am wondering it.

Check the hoses for oil stains before the crimp. If there is oil, that's where the R134a is escaping. Common AC stop leak works on them. Both my cars had leaks there years ago and the stuff has been holding for over 3 years. One recharge, stop leak kit Wal-Mart sells has a gauge that checks the low side so when you gas up the system you don't blow it up.
