Hey guys and gals. I have already posted this question in the trouble shooting, but you guys may be able to help. Here is the deal. I have a 2000 Sport V6 manual. Lately if I have ¼ tank of gas or less and am driving hard the car sputters at around 5,000 rpm or higher. As soon as I fuel up problem is solved. It also does not do it if I gradually ease up to 5 grand. I plan to replace the fuel filter this weekend. Itâ??s happened a few times so itâ??s not bad gas. The troubleshooting forum came back with fuel filter, fuel pump. I might also drain the gas tank dry. Any ideas??????

your needle may be off and you have less gas than it indicates

the gas isn't getting pumped through when nailing it up to 5Krpm....causing your sputtering.

Try the filter, however, it may be something else.

Also - don't let your gas tank go down too too far down to E. Not good for the fuel pump & cats.

It doesn't get to E. It starts around 1/4. The light isn't on when this happens. The needle isn't off. The fill gallons are in line with where they were before the problem.

Could be a couple of things. The first thing I would check would be the fuel filter (easiest). The next thing I would look at would be your fuel pressure. I would have that checked to see if the fuel pump is working properly. A classic symptom of a fuel pump going south is lack of fuel when the gas tank approaches empty (1/4 or less).

k.

maybe you have some crap in your tank and it is getting mixed in and being shot through the fuel injectors when the tank gets low.

anudda thing to check.

I'm gonna drop the fuel tank and drain it Thursday and replace the filter while I'm at it. I f the problem continues I'll replace the fule pump. Is the pump in the tank, or is it under the trunk. Any idea what they are getting for a pump these days?

not sure if this may also be a factor, but do you often run fuel injector cleaner through the tank?
I believe a decent interval is every 5,000 miles.

It's in the tank. I believe you access it by removing the back seat...access door I think I remember reading about?

No idea about fuel pump $$$...

I just put a bottle in about 10 days ago. It was about $6.00 so it wasn't cheap stuff.

Sometimes problems like these are casued b something so simple or so stupid, so.........

Maybe...... the fuel tank vent system is not working properly. The fuel vent system that lets air in as the fuel level goes down. Not sure, but isn't the fuel venting done through a check valve in the fuel cap, the check valve lets air in but doesn't let fuel vapors out. If air can't get in the tank as fuel is pumped out then the pressure inside the tank will get lower thus lowering the fuel pressure and eventually, at high power the pump will not be able to supply sufficent pressure to support the fuel flow needed to satisfy the engine. The reason you don't notice the problem all the time is becasue while cruising or driving easily the fuel is able to evaporate fast enough to maintain sufficent presssure in the tank to allow the fuel pump to make sufficent pressure to satisfy the engine. But if you get on the gas and rev the engine it will make good power for a short time but now the fuel is leaving faster than the fuel can evaporate and the pressure in the tank drops which makes it harder for the fuel pump to make pressure, eventaully the engine is starved for fuel.

When your fuel level is low and you're noticing the loss of power symptoms, stop and open the gas cap, if you hear air rush in the tank then you may just need a new cap.

an idea that struck me just now.
