Called the dealership...

They want $340.00 to change out the timing belt.
Belt Price $83.00

Is this the norm?

How difficult is it to do this myself?

Well the 2.5 duratec does not have a timing belt. It has timing chains 2 of them.. If they only want $340 to do BOTH chains then i would let them do it.. It not a fun job. Dont ask how I know smile

OK, now my ignorance is showing...

I'm talking about the belt that wraps around the water pump and everything else on the front of the engine.

The service guy at the dealership said it was the timing belt... I guess he knows about as much as I do.

What is this belt called? What should be the normal charge for replacing it and is it hard to do myself?

Like I said, they want $340.00 for parts and labor.
$83.00 for the Belt.

Seems high to me.

ooh, that ain't right. can't think of the correct technical term (too many beers at lunch wink , but it is often refered to as a serpentine belt. i haven't done mine yet so i don't know the prices, i guess the belt price seems about right, but you should be able to do it yourself with a few tools in less than a hour. mines due so i'm interested in any tips from the pros here...

p.s. the duratech has a separate belt on the other side of the engine block for water pump.

That is just wrong! You are looking at the drive (serpentine) belt. The belt costs less than $20.00 and takes 5 minutes to change. Post down in your local chapter and somebody will help you change it, or can recommend a honest mechanic.

AMEN!!!
I knew $340.00 was highway robbery!

The service guy is either new or just an idiot.
I thought that was what they were called... I guess I?m not as stupid as I thought I was.

I?ll have to post in the DFW Forum that I need some input and possibly some help...

What would I do without this web-site?

Timing belt was $47.xx and the drive (serp) belt was 27.xx at my local Ford dealer. Unless there's some strange tool that I'm not aware of that they use once and throw away, it can't cost that much.

Get a Haynes manual from your local AutoZone for $15 and look through it. It took me about 1 hour to do the whole thing in freezing weather on my Mystique and about the same for my Grand Am. The belt I got from Advance Auto glazed over and cracked within a week and the one from Ford still has the writing clearly written on it.

I've been told in the range of $50 parts and labor for serpantine belt. Timing belt on zetec is in the range you were quoted...at least at a dealer...don't know if independent would be cheaper.

Uh...if the service guy doesn't know difference between timing and serpentine belt I think the dealership has a problem.

The water pump is on the "back" of the engine. It has a belt all to itself.

The Accessory drive belt (serpentine) is located on the front of the engine.

It costs like $15-20 and can be changed in 30 mins. So even at a stealerships greatly increased rates it shouldn't be more than $100 for parts & labor...

Like mentioned - the Duratec has chains. No required change interval.

Regarding Duratec's waterpump belt - it's easy to do it yourself. And Serpantine belt is on another side of the engine.

Are you still running original waterpump ?
