i got a 96 contour with the V-6 engine and get the code
P0401 and already changed out the EGR valve and the vacuum sensor... still have code after resetting it.. then went out and got the gaskets for the throttle body and EGR valve and will remove them and clean out to get rid of code....
the DPFE sensor was also mentioned in several archive post, but the links showing you what a DPFE sensor is is outdated and missing... need to know what a DPFE sensor is and what it looks like, and can they be tested, i got vacuum gauges,
volt/munti meters etc... just cant find the DPFE sensor in my ford service CD or the hayes contour book...
thanks for a reply, any current links with pictures so i can find it and check it out????

I think the DPFE sensor is a silver box with three vac lines?? about the size of a box of matches.....

I don't know how to test the DPFE without a scanner.

The DPFE measure the difference in exhaust pressure and helps in metering the EGR. The DPFE sends a signal to the processor that helps in determining how much EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) there needs to be. DPFE failure is common.

Thanks Big Jim. I have always wondered what the DPFE sensor does.

DPFE is silver rectangular box located beneath EGR valve. It has two hoses (one inbound and one outbound) and an electrical connector. As was said previously, the only way I know to test it is with OBD-II scanner.

If you haven't cleaned out the EGR passages behind the throttle body gasket, then I bet that is the problem. I had a P0401 last year and replaced the EGR, EVR, and DPFE, but the code remained.

Once I cleaned the passages, everything worked great.

Actually two inbound reading pressure on either side of a venturi (narrowing) in the EGR tube from exhaust manifold. From this it deduces exhaust gas flow thru' EGR valve.
